18/06/10 - David James likely to start for England tonight
The word this morning is that David James is likely to start tonight's second group match for England against Algeria. Fabio Capello never actually names his squad until 2 hours before a match so their is no official confirmation yet that Robert Green will be left out of the team following his howler against the USA last Saturday, however, the BBC and many newspapers are reporting the fact that James will very likely start the match tonight.

England manager Fabio Capello has named his 23 man 2010 World Cup finals squad to take to South Africa this summer. The final squad is as follows:

England manager Fabio Capello has named his provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup finals this summer. The squad currently consists of 30 players who will travel to the pre-tournament training camp in Austria, then, on 1st June Capello will announce the final 23 man squad which he will take to the finals in South Africa. Capello surprised many people with his selection which includes Jamie Carragher (who Capello persuaded to come out of international retirement), uncapped players Michael Dawson and Adam Johnson and injured and injury-prone players Gareth Barry and Ledley King. The full 30 man squad is as follows:

England have been named by Fifa as one of the top 8 seeds for the 2010 World Cup draw due to take place on Friday (04 December). England will now avoid being drawn against the other top seeded teams in the initial group stages of the competition, the other seeded countries are Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy and hosts South Africa.

14/11/09 - Capello sees the positives in England defeat
Following England's 1-0 friendly defeat to Brazil today, England manager Fabio Capello siad "I learned some things. I understand the value of some players against this sort of team better now but I will not single out players.". Capello's team were dominated by the South Americans however his squad was largely injury affected with Wayne Rooney and Gareth Barry being the only 2 regular players in the starting line-up.

11/11/09 - Luke Young rejects England call up
Aston Villa defender Luke Young has retired from international football according to his agent. It is believed that Young made his decision in February in a letter to the Football Association, however, the matter only became public whenl he was called up to the squad to face Brazil on Saturday to replace the injured Glenn Johnson. Young last appeard for England in 2005 in a match against Argentina.

07/11/09 - Fabio Capello will leave injured players behind
England manager Fabio Capello has warned there will be no room for players carrying injuries in his World Cup 2010 squad. The Italian said "The players with us in South Africa will be all fit. It's impossible to wait for one player," and added "Little things are OK, but bigger problems and they will not be there." The comments come as England prepare for next weeks friendly against Brazil.

With World Cup 2010 qualification in the bag and injuries to a number of key players, England manager Fabio Capello will be trying our a few different player options in England's final qualifying match this evening. One of the differences for the game with Belarus tonight is expected to be the partnering of Peter Crouch and Gabriel Agbonlahor as a strike force.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will miss England's final World Cup 2010 qualifier against Belarus tomorrow as a result of a groin injury he picked up during Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Ukraine. Gerrard limped out of training today and is expected to return to Merseyside shortly.

11/08/09 - Steven Gerrard becomes the latest England casualty
Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard is the latest player to join the England team injury list for Wednesday's friendly match against the Netherlands after suffering a tight groin. Gerrard's withdrawal came on the heels of Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster who picked up a knock during Sunday's Community Shield. Joe Hart of Manchester City will replace Foster while no replacement has yet been named for Gerrard, the full squad is now as follows:

A scan on Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard's leg has revealed a torn hamstring which will keep him sidelined for 3 weeks. The injury came during Liverpool FC's 1-0 FA Cup replay loss to merseyside rivals Everton and will see him miss Premier League matches against Portsmouth and Manchester City as well as England's upcoming friendly against Spain.

19/11/08 - Walcott injury hands further blow to Capello's England selection
Fabio Capello's received a further blow to his England team selection yesterday when Arsenal's Theo Walcott dislocated his shoulder in training with the England squad. 17/11/08 - Capello to check claims of Gerrard's injury
England manager Fabio Capello has asked Steven Gerrard to report to him regardless of Liverpool FC's claims that the midfielder tore a leg muscle during the club's 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Capello, who is already without Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and goalkeeper Joe Hart and whose captain John Terry is doubtful, said that the international team's medical staff would decide on Gerrard's fitness on Monday.

15/10/08 - Captain� Ferdinand condemns 'WAG' culture
Stand-in England Captain Rio Ferdinand has spoken out about the 'WAG' (wives and girlfriends) culture that made a 'circus' of England's 2006 World Cup finals campaign. The Manchester United defender said "People were worrying more about what other people were wearing and where they were going, rather than the team. It was like watching a theatre unfolding and football almost became a secondary element to the main event. When you step back and look back at that, you think like it was a circus. He added "you don't get many tournaments in your career. To give yourself the best chance, you have to be focused."
